How To Keep Our Environment Clean

The environment is important to all life on earth, not just wildlife, we humans depend on it for our very survival as well. This may be hard to visualize because of how we have structured our living space today. We have completed reshaped the world to suit our comforts and as a result of these processes, many natural environments have been compromised.

How we dirty our environment

Pollution comes in many forms, there is noise, air, water, land and lately, even orbital pollution and each type happens as a result of different processes. We utilize heavy machinery and engines for our purposes, either to construct new buildings, or for the extraction of materials and transport. As a result, the areas where these activities take place are usually abandoned by more seclusive animals, which in turn affects the entire ecosystem, in many cases, resulting in a lifeless landscape. Most of our energy comes from the combustion of one type of fuel or the other and the emissions from this process can greatly contaminate our breathable air. Even if levels do not become directly toxic to humans, they do have damaging effects on our natural environments.

We produce many liquid and solvent wastes during our daily lives and often they are simply poured down the drain, with no concern as to where they end up. We also create an increasing amount of solid wastes and due to poor disposal practices, many of these eventually end up on land or in waterways, further contributing to pollution. As we become a space faring race, we also leave many remnants of our journeys into orbit, in orbit around earth and the mass of materials in that region increases every year. Scientist predict that eventually, we may completely inhibit our ability to leave earth’s atmosphere, forever trapping us on the planet.

Keeping Earth Clean

The first step towards keeping our environment clean would be to identify all the ways in which we pollute it and take measures to address each one. This will not be an easy process. We could begin with the elimination of disposables in our consumer markets, with more focus on creating packages that are actually designed to be recycled. This way, we would not have to bear the expensive cost of the inefficient recycling systems in place today.

Our planet is our home and it is more fragile than we may think. A simple change in the water and carbon cycles could hail the end of life on earth as we know it.

...About Yamuna. But not just Yamuna • Every river, every lake, every water body getting polluted. Full of our sewage. • We take water, return sewage. • 80% of water leaves as sewage • Cities are growing, need more water, discharge more pollution. • Dirty water means ill health: biggest cause of children’s death. Be angry. Not acceptable. ------------------------------------------------- 22 Km stretch in Delhi Contributes 70 per cent of the total pollution load of the river Funds spent, programmes implemented • By 2006 17 sewage treatment plants built; 10 common effluent plants built; 30 km of trunk sewers repairs (out of 130 km) Slums removed from riverfront ------------------------------------------------- Low-cost toilets built Money Spent -Not about pollution. It is about sewage • We discuss pollution because it is modern and somehow touchable. • We do not discuss human excreta and its disposal. That is an untouchable subject. • Flush and forget mindset. • Drains will carry it. Somebody will treat it. Somebody will build sewage treatment plant. Clean it. Dispose it. • Don’t care. Yamuna is polluted not because of us ------------------------------------------------- But it is about us: our water; our sewage Current system: bring water (from distance); treat, pump, pipe to home, take sewage, pump, pipe, treat and dispose…river will be clean • Should work. But: a....
