South Bronx United is looking for highly motivated, energetic volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of South Bronx youth. Academic Coaches work with one student or a small group (2-3 students) in the South Bronx United Progam to provide homework help and support the youth in reaching their grade level in math and/or the English Language Arts. Academic Coaches will meet with the students, ages 10-15, for 2 hours on a set day every week.
Dates: September 2014-June 2015
After School Hours: Monday-Friday, 4-6pm
Evenings Hours: Mondays and Wednesdays, 6-8pm
Urban Assembly School for Careers in Sports, Mott Haven HS Campus, 730 Concourse Village West, Bronx, NY 10451
While the program runs every school day for at least 2 hours, Academic Coaches are only asked to commit to 2 hours, one day a week for one semester. However, if a coach would like to be more involved, he/she is always welcome.
Training: An orientation at the beginning of service will be run for all Academic Coaches to give general guidelines and best practices. Additionally a training will be held at or near the beginning of service to provide tutoring tips and to go over the specific needs of the student(s).
In addition to helping provide the resources and support to allow underserved students to thrive in school, SBU is happy to connect with your school to see if your volunteer hours can work towards school service or academic requirements.
Beyond Tutoring: Youth participating in the program are also members of the South Bronx United Furia Azul, Strikers, and Shooting Stars Travel Soccer Teams. Academic Coaches are welcome and encouraged to come out and see a game or get involved in a practice as youth are extremely passionate about the sport and its a great way to connect with the kids.
March is here! This month is chock full of events. We expect to see you at Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday, March 15th. You can set up an appointment with your child’s teacher between 12:40-2:15 or 4:30-7:30. If you can’t make any of these times, please set up an appointment on Tuesday afternoons between 2:20-3:35. STUDENTS IN GRADES 2-5 ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND CONFERENCES SO THEY CAN SPEAK ABOUT WHAT THEY HAVE LEARNED AND WHAT THEIR GOALS ARE FOR THE FUTURE.
Please be sure to complete the NYC Parent Survey (inside a green envelope). The survey is designed to give us your feedback about how we can make PS 94 an even better place for learning.
Scholastic Book Fair is being held in both libraries during the week of March 12th. The Book Fair will be open during school hours and Parent Teacher Conferences.
As always, we appreciate all that you do at home to help your child's learning. Our students need more home support practicing math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Even though today’s math is way different than how we were taught, the importance of learning math facts has never changed. If your child is experiencing difficulty or frustration, I encourage you to reach out to the teacher to discuss ideas for providing extra support. Our school website has free APPS that your child can access. Our staff can provide targeted interventions to address areas of need, and our teachers are always willing to share strategies that you can try at home.
