You can go on these missions and plough your time and effort into humanitarian work as quietly as you choose to, but it won´t hurt your career prospects however you do it. You may even win a humanitarian award!

Taking Expertise, Equipment And Medicine Home

Peru

Dr. Cesar Jara is one example of a cardiologist who is bringing care to some of the poorest people in Peru as part of the medical mission teams lead by the Peruvian American Medical Society (PAMS), and organization with almost 40 years behind it.

Dr. Jara has been traveling from where he lives and normally practices in Melbourne, Miami to Lima, Peru every year since 2007. During his mission in 2012, he performed interventional cardiology procedures at the permanent mission PAMS has established in Lima, but he has also traveled with portable EKG and echocardiogram equipment to distant, native communities. In 2011, he went to Chincha, the site affected by a devastating earthquake in 2007, and where there´s extreme poverty and regular medical care is practically nonexistent. Though hypertension is common among this population, almost no one can afford even the cheapest necessary medication.

Cameroon

Dr. Dzudie Tamdja Anastase completed his training in internal medicine and cardiology at Yaounde University in Cameroon and Lyon I Claude Bernard University in France. After winning the Twin Centre´s Fellowship grant awarded by the World Heart Federation, he had the chance to complete essential training at a prestigious institution that has helped him strengthen the quality of care he is able to provide within his own native country.

Cameroon is now challenged by the triple burden of growing chronic cardiovascular disease, limited resources and endemic infectious diseases. Noninvasive cardiology has been implemented only in recent decades, and is beginning to address the increasing incidence of hypertension, heart failure, RHD and other ischaemic heart diseases, which are on the rise due to rampant cigarette smoking and the westernization of other dietary and lifestyle habits.

Dr. Anastase is involved with capacity building at a local university and he also works as a clinical cardiologist at Douala General Hospital, and is one of the many doctors working to improve the epidemic of non-communicable diseases responsible for 35 million deaths per year. Here´s more about his story.

From Canada to Arequipa, Peru

Lack of specialty training, inadequate financial support, poor access to limited resources and other factors has meant that Peru really needs mentorship, medical expertise and health policy advice to improve cardiovascular patient outcomes, and this multidisciplinary team from Canada hoped to do just that.

Over a 2-year period, 15 cardiac repairs were performed in patients with rheumatic, congenital and ischemic heart disease. Around 150 patients were assessed and managed from an outpatient clinic, too, and despite multiple challenges, they were able to help the local team deliver advanced cardiovascular care to many patients with few alternatives, achieving good early and 1-year outcomes. Could you become part of a team like this, which consisted of specialists in cardiac surgery, cardiology, anesthesiology and critical care and cardiopulmonary bypass perfusionists? Here´s more about their experiences in Peru.
